On Monday, August 4th, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties had the joy of joining forces with Mark Morrison, the internationally known R&B artist behind the multi-platinum hit “Return of the Mack”. But this time, Morrison’s “return” was all about giving back — and giving kids a confident start to the school year.
More than 30 children from BBBS and Coastal Middle & High School were invited to The Mall at Wellington Green for a private back-to-school shopping spree. Thanks to the generosity of Morrison and the hospitality of the mall, the day began before the doors opened to the public, allowing Littles to shop for school shoes, socks, and clothes at Foot Locker and Foot Locker Kids without the rush of the crowd.
The morning was filled with excitement — kids carefully choosing sneakers they’d be proud to wear on the first day of school. One especially moving moment came when 8-year-old Apollo Acevedo, who is currently waiting to be matched with a Big Brother, realized he wasn’t on the original list to receive shoes. He began to cry, thinking he might have to miss out. Without hesitation, Morrison stepped in and personally purchased Apollo a brand-new pair of sneakers.
“When I was young, I could never afford name-brand trainers, and I never forgot how that felt,” Morrison shared. “No child should have to walk into school feeling like they don’t belong. If I can change that for even one kid, it’s worth it.”
Morrison’s impact goes well beyond music. While his chart-topping songs have reached millions, his passion for mentorship and community support is what truly defines his legacy today.
Yvette Acevedo Flores, CEO of BBBS of Palm Beach and Martin Counties, expressed her gratitude: “Families are trying to stretch every dollar for back-to-school shopping, so when Mark Morrison offered each of our kids a new pair of shoes, we were so happy. Everyone had a great time shopping at Foot Locker and we’re so appreciative to Mark for giving our kids this wonderful opportunity.”
From the smiles on the kids’ faces to the boost of confidence they’ll carry into the classroom, this back-to-school spree was more than just a shopping trip — it was a reminder that community, compassion, and kindness can make all the difference.
Kids like Apollo are still waiting for mentors.
